In 2019, OnePlus has released more smartphones that he hadn't done it in another previous year. In 2020, the company shouldn't slow down, as we already have solid rumors suggesting that a OnePlus 8, as well as a OnePlus 8 Pro, are on the way.

We also have strong rumors suggesting that there is a new mid-range or economical device from the company, which we tentatively call the OnePlus 8 Lite. If it happens, it would be the company's first non-flagship phone product since the OnePlus X, which launched in 2015.

Here are all the rumors we've heard so far about the OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Lite and OnePlus 8 Pro. Make sure to bookmark this page, as we will update it regularly with new information as it appears!

OnePlus 8 series: name and release date

OnePlus is very good at keeping vital information about its next products confidential. As such, we have no confirmation yet that the company's next phone launches will be known as the OnePlus 8 series. However, there is no indication that the company will change its naming scheme usual, so we can be fairly confident that the OnePlus 8 and its high-end brother the OnePlus 8 Pro are what the company will launch soon.

The OnePlus 8 Lite, however, is no longer a joker. The nickname "Lite" sounds reasonable, but the last time OnePlus released an economical device, it went with a brand new name in the OnePlus X. Therefore, it is entirely possible that the OnePlus 8 Lite has a totally different name, maybe even the OnePlus X 2 (although that seems unlikely).

Until we hear the opposite, we will continue to use the names OnePlus 8, Pro and Lite.

As for the release date of all these products, it is likely that we will see them launch in May 2020. The OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 6 both landed in May and the OnePlus 5 in June. It is also possible that we will see the OnePlus 8 land as early as April 2020 to put more space between it and the launch of the inevitable OnePlus 8T in the fall.

OnePlus 8 Series: Design

We've already seen leaked renderings for the three rumored devices in the OnePlus 8 family. Leaks come from a reliable source @OnLeaks via partners Cash Karo and 91Mobiles. As such, we are confident that these renderings give us a very good idea of what the OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus 8 Lite will look like.

Let's review each device individually.

OnePlus 8

The OnePlus 8 is a little different from its predecessor, the OnePlus 7, which itself seemed only slightly different from its own predecessor, the OnePlus 6T. The rear camera system is similarly arranged with a centered hump and aligned vertically. However, a third lens is added, which is a nice upgrade.

On the front, the water drop notch has disappeared. Instead, OnePlus seems to follow the path of the punched hole by adding a single selfie lens as a cutout in the upper left corner.

The usual layout of the OnePlus button survives with the volume rocker on the left and the power button and alert slider on the right. The USB-C port is in its usual place and there is still no 3.5mm headphone jack.

Keep in mind that the OnePlus 7 was not launched in the United States, so it is possible that many parts of the world may never see this device on store shelves. Go to the Price and availability section to find out more.

OnePlus 8 Pro

From the back, the OnePlus 8 Pro doesn't look at all different from the OnePlus 7T Pro. The camera layout, including the center left ToF sensor, are all arranged pretty much the same in these renderings as they appear on the 7T Pro.

The front is where things get interesting. the OnePlus 7 Pro and the OnePlus 7T Pro featured an all-screen display without a notch or cutout. This was possible due to the pop-up selfie camera system on both devices. On the OnePlus 8 Pro, however, the company seems to have abandoned this system, opting instead for a perforation cutout, as we have seen on the renderings of the OnePlus 8.

Some may see this as a regression, as the full screen display was a highlight of the 7 Pro and 7T Pro. However, OnePlus could do it for a good reason: it is possible that the OnePlus 8 Pro is the first IP certified device of the brand. It's very difficult for a device with a mechanical pop-up camera to get an IP rating, so OnePlus may have sacrificed it for certification. We can't think of any other reason why OnePlus would sacrifice its all-screen design, which was such a prestigious feature in the 7 Pro series.

If you already own a OnePlus 7 Pro or OnePlus 7T Pro, you will have to decide for yourself whether the loss of the pop-up selfie camera in the OnePlus 8 Pro is an upgrade or downgrade.

OnePlus 8 Lite

According to these leaked renderings, the OnePlus 8 Lite is the device that is significantly different from any other OnePlus phone. The camera boss on the back is unlike any we have ever seen on a OnePlus product and the front panel is very different from other entries in the 8 series.

It should also be noted that we have seen leaking real images which seem to show a OnePlus 8 Lite prototype. This gives us even more confidence that the above renderings are correct. Check out this picture here:

The first phone you can see on the right is a dead ringtone for these @OnLeaks renderings. However, it looks like there is a triple-lens camera in this real picture, so the renderings may be wrong on this. We are going to assume that the prototype is just that: a prototype. If this is the case, a dual lens system on the back is much more likely for an economical camera.

Whether this phone is called OnePlus 8 Lite or not, it is very clearly a cheaper device. It has a flat screen rather than a curved screen, two rear lenses instead of three or four, and larger screens. Unfortunately, OnePlus still does not provide a headphone jack, even though other companies have done so with their cheaper devices, including Google and Huawei.

OnePlus 8 Series: Specifications and Features

Before OnePlus 7T Pro

OnePlus has released some spec confirmations for the OnePlus 8 series. Let's take a look at these confirmed details first, and then delve into speculation.

Confirmed specifications

At CES 2020, OnePlus confirmed that the OnePlus 8 series will offer display refresh rates of 120 Hz. These new screens come courtesy of Samsung. This is a huge increase from the 90 Hz display refresh rates found on the OnePlus 7 Pro, OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro.

However, the OnePlus 8 Lite is unlikely to have such a high refresh rate. But don't worry, because OnePlus promised last year that every phone it releases will have a display refresh rate of 90 Hz in the future, so even the budget-oriented entry should have a higher refresh rate than the usual 60Hz .

While this is not explicitly confirmed by OnePlus, a set of disclosed presentation slides (in Chinese) confirms that the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro will also be delivered with a dedicated MEMC chip. MEMC stands for Motion Estimation and Motion Compensation and is generally a technology available on TVs. It inserts new images between existing ones in a video to reduce motion blur.

OnePlus' MEMC technology can apparently lower low frame rate videos to a maximum of 120 frames per second, making the image smoother and more natural. If it really works as expected, it could mean a much better gaming experience on future OnePlus phones.

Additionally, OnePlus' 120 Hz screen has a 240 Hz touch sampling rate and can apparently reach a maximum brightness of 1,000 nits. It is powered by what OnePlus calls Smooth Chain technology. However, details are scarce at the moment thanks to official information available only in Chinese.

While there has been no official announcement, it is fairly certain that the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro will both present the latest and the best Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset. There has never been a OnePlus flagship smartphone without the latest SoC in the Qualcomm 800 series, so we're pretty sure it will be included.

With the Snapdragon 865 on board, the 8 and 8 Pro would be ready for 5G, because the 865 has a built-in 5G modem.

Likewise, all OnePlus smartphones released in the past year have had a minimum of 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. As such, it's reasonable to assume that the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro will have at least as much memory included, even on the most entry-level models.

As for the cameras, the OnePlus 8 Pro may have New Samsung 108MP sensor as the primary lens. We expect many flagship phones in 2020 to have this sensor, and OnePlus generally opts for the latest and the best. However, if the Pro variant has it, then it is possible that the vanilla variant is not. It is also possible that OnePlus stays with a 48MP or 64MP sensor for both devices.

We have heard a rumor that OnePlus could finally offer wireless charging with the 8 series. If this is true, it would probably only affect the 8 Pro and possibly the 8. It is unlikely to happen on the 8 Lite.

As mentioned earlier, it is also possible that OnePlus will remove the contextual selfie camera from the OnePlus 8 Pro to help finally get an IP rating. It's purely speculative at the moment, but we can't think of any other reason for OnePlus to abandon the all-screen display of the 7 Pro.

As for the OnePlus 8 Lite, the specs for this device are completely unknown at this time. If OnePlus wants it to be a budget-conscious device competing with phones like the Google Pixel 3a, there will likely be no Snapdragon 865 on board. Instead, it will likely have a Snapdragon 700 or even 600 series. It is also possible that it will drop below the 6GB / 128GB memory trend of 2019. Unfortunately, it doesn’t There is simply no way to accurately predict what OnePlus has in mind for this phone, as we have not seen anything like it for almost five years.

Finally, none of the above renderings have fingerprint scanners, so it is very likely that we will see the optical fingerprint sensors built into series 7 refer to series 8.

OnePlus 8 series: price and availability

OnePlus smartphones are getting more and more expensive every year. There is no reason to think that this year will be different. We don't know how much the phones will be more expensive, but we can look at the prices for 2019 to get a good estimate.

Here are the OnePlus 2019 prices for each of the base models:

  • OnePlus 7 (6 GB / 128 GB) – € 559 (~ $ 622)
  • OnePlus 7 Pro (6 GB / 128 GB) – $ 669
  • OnePlus 7T (8 GB / 128 GB) – $ 599
  • OnePlus 7T Pro (8 GB / 256 GB) – € 759 (~ $ 845)

Judging by this, it is reasonable to assume that the OnePlus 8 could start at around $ 600 – $ 650 and the OnePlus 8 Pro could start at around $ 700 – $ 750. These are only estimates, but the devices are very unlikely to be cheaper than that.

Again, for the OnePlus 8 Lite, we have no idea what it will cost. If OnePlus wants it to compete with the hugely popular Google Pixel 3a, we assume it would cost less than $ 400. However, your guess is as good as ours at the moment.

Regarding availability, the OnePlus 7 was not launched in the United States with the company, focusing only on the OnePlus 7 Pro. OnePlus may repeat this strategy in 2020.

However, we have heard a rumor that contradicts this. according to Android Police, the OnePlus 8 (not the 8 Pro) could land on Verizon Wireless here in the United States. It would be the first time that OnePlus has launched a smartphone on Big Red. Is it possible that the OnePlus 8 will land on Verizon and the OnePlus 8 Pro will land in the company's current home, T-Mobile? We are not sure.

It is also possible that the OnePlus 8 Lite does not see a release in the United States, as the company could focus on emerging markets such as India.

That's all we know about the OnePlus 8, the OnePlus 8 Lite and the OnePlus 8 Pro so far. Let us know in the comments below if we missed anything or what you expect most with the next OnePlus smartphone!
