A recent dismantling of the APK done by XDA Developers revealed that Google’s dialer app may soon come up with a cool new feature: call recording. The disassembly was performed on the Google Phone version 43.0.289191107 application on a Pixel 4.

It revealed a new layout, icon, and a few other possible assets regarding call recording in the dialer, including a button during a call to start recordings. Recording calls was not possible on the original Android versions without rooting from Android 8 Oreo. The developers of Google’s closed bypass apps used to enable this feature in Android 9 Pie, presumably for reasons of confidentiality and security.

We don't know why Google would implement call recording again in its native phone app, but we don't complain. By default, the app is available on all Google Pixel devices, Android One devices, and even Xiaomi devices. Hopefully, if you're using a compatible device, you should see this feature soon.

Unfortunately, APK teardowns cannot officially verify whether a feature is coming or not, and this is no different. And even if Google implements it, we don't know if it would be limited to certain devices or not. Apparently, this is a feature that owners of Xiaomi devices have been looking for for some time, so it would make sense that they get the feature, although this is only speculation at the moment.

And you? Do you have a device that uses the Google Phone app and would you find it useful to record native calls? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
