QR Code Payments Coming To Apple Pay

QR Code Payments Coming To Apple Pay

Apple is developing a QR code feature for Apple Pay. That’s the latest revelation from 9to5Mac, which has been rooting through the code in the iOS 14 developer beta.

The feature seems to work in two ways. First, you can scan a QR code or conventional barcode with your iPhone’s camera to initiate a payment. Or you can yourself generate a QR code on your iPhone and then show this to a QR code reader (which can just be a phone camera).

The latter can make Apple Pay more viable in some countries where QR code payments that work this way are the norm, such as India. It is also possible that this may work with private payments between iPhone users.

Apple did not mention any QR codes at WWDC so the feature is probably not supposed to be released in the first version of iOS 14 – it could be planned for a later point update to the operating system.

If you’d like to try out the update, here’s how to install the iOS 14 beta.
