In one of the most noticeable changes in macOS Big Sur (11.0), Apple has replaced the icons of the preinstalled applications.
All icons are now rounded squares, the same style that’s already used in iOS and iPadOS. In addition, Apple has made sure to reuse the same symbols that already exist on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, which means that the Mac-specific icons for Mail, Messages, FaceTime, Calculator and Maps are gone.
For many of the Mac-only applications, such as Image Viewer, QuickTime Player, Disk Utility and ColorSync Utility, elements are taken from the old icons. But in some cases (including Launchpad), Apple has created a new icon from scratch.
If you want to see comparisons between all the new and old icons, Cult of Mac has an exhaustive review. You can read about other changes in our macOS Big Sur vs Catalina comparison.
