A new privacy feature in iOS 14 lets users know when an app is copying what’s on the clipboard. One of the first apps to get stuck in the trap was Tiktok, which turned out to copy from the clipboard more or less all the time, but has since promised to reduce this.
However, Tiktok is not alone in this behaviour. Security researcher Tommy Musk says in an interview with Ars Technica that he has already found 53 additional apps that snoop freely in the user’s clipboard when they’re open.
These include famous news apps such as The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Fox News, games like Bejeweled and Fruit Ninja, and social apps like Viber and Weibo.
Many of the apps appear to copy indiscriminately from the clipboard, but some are a little smarter: Pixelmator, for example, copies only if there’s an image in the clipboard.
