Apple Patent Lets You Take ‘Group Selfies’ Remotely

The coronavirus pandemic continues to affect our world in different ways. Apple, for example, appears to be working on a new technology inspired by social distancing: synthetic group selfies.

A new Apple patent, spotted by Patently Apple, describes a camera feature that allows you to invite other users to participate in a group image, even though the subjects are in different locations. The software would then compose a picture with all the “participants”, based on pictures or videos taken there and then, or saved pictures from the library.

Whether we will actually see this feature in a future version of iOS remains to be seen; patents do not always lead to actual products. But keep your eyes peeled at WWDC 2020 on 22 June, where Apple will walk us through the new features in autumn’s iOS 14 update.
