Valve Shuts Down SteamVR For Mac

Valve has announced that it’s shutting down development of SteamVR for the Mac. New updates will no longer be released, but anyone who wants can still download existing versions by looking up SteamVR in the library, clicking the gear and selecting Properties, and activating the Mac beta in the Beta tab.

The move doesn’t come as a huge surprise. The tech has not become the next big thing that was predicted when Oculus Rift was in the loop and several other manufacturers were working on headsets. And on Mac, it has basically become nothing at all.

In 2017, Apple unveiled support for HTC Vive in macOS 10.13, but that did not lead Mac users to buy up headsets to any great extent. Users can be counted on the fingers of a quite small number of hands.

It’s possible that Mac users won’t fully embrace VR until Apple does so itself. It’s been rumoured for years that the company is working on a VR headset of its own.

The developers will focus their resources into Windows and Linux instead.
