How to pause or cancel BT Sport subscription

Despite first broadcasting as recently as 2013, BT Sport has quickly established itself as one of the most popular provider of subscription TV channels.

For the 2019/20 season, it has every Champions League and Europa League match, as well 52 live Premier League matches. Elsewhere, it has rights to the Aviva Premiership Rugby, Moto GP and plenty of WTA tennis among a bevy of live offerings.

Of course, there are many reasons why you might want to cancel. The big one at the moment is the coronavirus, which has wiped out much of the elite level sport across the world.

Like Sky Sports, BT Sport has introduced the chance to ‘pause’ your subscription as well as the regular cancellation option. Many people will still enjoy watching the channels, but can’t justify paying for such a meagre offering during the outbreak.

In this article, we’ll show you how to easily pause or cancel your BT Sport subscription.

How to pause BT Sport subscription

Pausing your BT Sport subscription isn’t quite as easy as it is on Sky. Firstly you’ll need to have one of their flexible TV packages, which allows you to move between different content relatively freely.

The flexible packages work with a baseline monthly fee and a series of bolt-ons, so you’ll save £5 a month by switching to Now TV instead. Of course, moving to the Big Entertainment bundle will mean you’re paying an extra £5 instead.

  1. Head to the BT website and log in
  2. Click ‘Your products’ and then ‘TV’
  3. Under ‘Your TV’, click manage
  4. Once you enter verification details, there will be an option to modify your existing package

How to cancel BT Sport subscription

If you’re not lucky enough to be on the flexible package, cancelling outright is probably your best bet. Just make sure you request a cancellation at least 2 days before your next billing date to ensure you don’t get charged for the following month. The process is similar to if you’re pausing:

  1. Head to the BT website and log in
  2. Click ‘Your products’ and then ‘BT Sport’
  3. Under ‘Your BT Sport’, click ‘Manage’ under the relevant subscription
  4. Enter your details to verify the account and there will be an option to cancel your subscription

However, BT has warned that with large numbers of people trying to cancel and a reduced workforce it may be better to call them. The number you’ll need is 0800 783 1401.

BT do not yet have a company-wide policy on cancellations, so you may be offered a month for free or two years at half price while they work out a longer term strategy.
