Last May, Google plunged its toes into the mid-range smartphone market with the launch of the Pixel 3a. This year we expect this strategy to continue with the Pixel 4a. Here's everything we know so far.
the Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL have been on the market for quite some time now, and they have brought a lot of new technology to Mountain View's internal mobile hardware. However, with the Pixel 4a and 4a XL, we don't expect many of these new things to jump into more affordable models. This does not mean that any welcome functionality will not be returned by older Pixel phones!

A release date in spring 2020?
The Pixel 3a and 3a XL were launched in May 2019. Google is expected to stick to the same release schedule this year and I expect to see the 4a and 4a XL in the spring. Sales of the Pixel 3a phones have been very good, so it is unlikely that Google will abandon the mid-range at this point. We should see them at the Google I / O 2020 developer conference.
Google Pixel 4a design and specifications
Thanks to the new renderings published on 91mobiles, some design choices for the Pixel 4a series can now be revealed. Unsurprisingly, the 90Hz screen and the Soli radar chip that were behind some of the most innovative features of the Pixel 4 phones will not be included in the more affordable versions. That means a return to the traditional fingerprint sensor on the back of smartphones and a perforated screen for the selfie camera rather than the large upper bezel that houses all the unlocking technology for the face. There should also be a 3.5mm headphone jack included on the new Pixel 4a phones, which will be a nice surprise for fans of wired headsets.
The Pixel 4a appears to be a 5.7-inch screen, which is slightly larger than the 5.6-inch Pixel 3a. On the back we can see that the camera module looks like that of the regular Pixel 4, but rather than a dual camera, Google has chosen to include a single camera and LED flash. The bottom charging port is USB-C, but it's not a huge surprise.
In terms of power, we expect these new phones to come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 or 765, at least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. There could also be a 6 GB / 128 GB version.
Price and availability
The Google Pixel 3a was launched at $ 399, and it seems likely that Google will follow this directive again. If there is no Soli radar technology and only one camera, $ 350 would also not be out of the question here. The mid-range market has become much busier than 12 months ago and Google could reduce the RRP in order to be more competitive. We will have to wait and have a closer look at the launch of the phone.
