Motorola Moto Razr preorders start on January 22 at Verizon

Motorola today announced that its folding Moto Razr phone will soon be available. The device was expected to launch on January 9, but the company pushed the on-sale date back a bit in the face of strong demand.

In North America, Motorola will make the Moto Razr available for pre-order starting January 26. Consumers can pre-order the phone via Verizon Wireless, Walmart, and Motorola.com. The device will reach stores on February 6.

Motorola says launch dates for markets outside North America will be announced on a per-market basis, though it previously said the phone will be available from EE in the UK, and in Canada and India later this year.

That’s all Motorola and Verizon have shared regarding the timing of the launch thus far.

It costs a lot

Motorola previously revealed the Moto Razr’s price, and it’s not cheap. The phone costs an eye-watering $1,500, or $62.49 per month for 24 months on a payment plan with Verizon Wireless. At least it costs less than the Samsung Galaxy Fold, which goes for $1,980, and the Huawei Mate X, which sells for about $2,530.

Pricing for Asia, Australia, India, Latin America, and the UK has not been specified.

To put this into perspective, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G, which is about the most advanced “normal” phone on the market, sells for $1,299.

It’s a sub-flagship

The Motorola Moto Razr may be a pricey folding phone, but it’s not quite a flagship. The phone’s fancy hinge impresses, but under the hood you’ll find a Snapdragon 710 processor with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The opened screen measures 6.2 inches with a 21:9 aspect ratio. An external screen measures 2.7 inches and is what you’ll use to scan notifications. Other specs include a 16MP main camera and a 5MP selfie camera, 2,510mAh battery with 15W Turbo Charge, Bluetooth 5 and NFC, USB-C but no headphone jack, and a splash-resistant but not waterproof chassis. Interestingly, there’s no SIM tray as the phone relies on an eSIM setup.
